What's bellringing?
Welcome to the Central Bucks Branch website.
The Central Bucks Branch (founded in 1928 by Revd J F Amies) is one of fifteen branches in the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers and comprises 35 towers in the centre of Buckinghamshire.
Our hobby and service, Church bellringing, is an old tradition which can be traced back several hundred years. The type of ringing we do, however, involves a bell being rotated on bearings with the aid of a rope and wheel. By turning the bell 360 degrees we can control the timing of the toll.
This type of ringing is known as 'change ringing' because of the ability to swap adjacent pairs of bells to form patterns of sound - this is commonly heard ringing out from most UK towers when weddings or services are being rung for. This style of ringing, although not unique to England, is most commonly practised here, because of this it's often referred to as 'English change ringing'. The exact date from which it started to be performed is unknown, but recorded history of English ringing dates back at least 400 years! The art hasn't changed much in that time, although the technicality of the performed pieces and the theory (much like with music) has increased massively.
You can find detailed information on each of the towers, contacts and branch activities in our website, which we hope you find useful.
If you have any comments or suggestions, or would like to contribute further to this website, then please visit our contact page. To find out more about ringing, please visit one of the links below or continue to browse the site for more about our area. Please feel free to contact us and arrange to come along to one of the many practice nights to see what's involved.
Thank you for visiting and we look forward to seeing you soon
